Keep Margate Green

Update: In 2024, Margate City Commissioners voted to approved 137 townhomes to be built on this Executive Golf Course property. Keep Margate Green worked for many years to keep this space green and did a great job helping get improvements for surrounding communities and getting a public park, added green space to the area. Green space in Margate will always matter! Thank you for your support.

The Carolina Golf Course is still trying to keep the green space. Please help oppose these developments so Margate maintains green space. Join #KeepMargateGreen on Facebook to show your support!

Garden Patio Villas Association was formerly surrounded by this lovely, family-friendly, 9-hole, Margate Executive Golf Course. Many of our villas are directly on the golf course or it’s our backyard view. This beautiful view is the reason many of us purchased property here in Margate, Florida!

Keep Margate Green” is a phrase (coined by Charlie Artner, a resident in Margate, in 2018) because Developers have been trying to purchase Margate’s golf courses and re-develop them. Margate residents want to keep Margate Executive Golf Course and Carolina Golf Club, or at least keep it green space!

In 2019, Developer Lennar, tried to purchase the Executive Golf Course in Margate. Garden Patio Villas is united in fighting to keep Margate green with the “Keep Margate Green” movement.

Many concerned residents attend our City of Margate Commission meetings regularly and have voiced their disapproval. We are determined to keep Margate green!

By the end of 2019, Lennar retracted their request to re-zone. Thank you to the many residents who helped fight this good fight! Near the beginning of 2020, 13th Floor Homes ended their application for the Carolina Golf Course.

In 2020, there was a contract and plans to re-develop the golf courses by Lee & Associates! This died with the COVID-19 pandemic. For awhile, all was quiet. The story continues!

Margate Executive Golf Course, Garden Patio Villas and Oriole Gardens II

Garden Patio Villas sent an emailed letter to the Margate City Commission, January 2021. All of our Members here in our senior community want their voice to be heard, as do other senior communities next to the former Margate Executive Golf Course.

In 2021, the owner Mike Fimiani of Margate Executive Golf Course, contacted the City of Margate and communities around the golf course. He is requesting a re-zone for 200 residential townhome development before selling this land for millions to a Developer. He also has threatened to build an outdoor recreational sports facility under current zoning., Mr. Fimiani put in an application to re-zone the golf course from Commercial Recreational (S1) to Residential (R-10). Make a difference and voice your opinion at at City Commission meetings! Ultimately, let our Margate City Commissioners know we want to keep Margate green as it was originally developed in 1982. The owner closed the golf course at the end of August 2021. Since then, residents surround this land continue to try and keep this green space.

In 2022, Mr. Fimiani has submitted an application for rezoning the golf course for more residential townhomes. Once the application is submitted, it must pass the City of Margate Development Review Committee (DRC). It did not pass. It is currently in a “stand-still” state while Mr. Fimiani tries to influence neighboring homes and communities.

In 2023, Fimiani Development Corporation submitted an application to the City of Margate wanting to redevelopment the land into 132 townhomes. This application asking to rezone and redevelop the green space will be voted on by the Margate Commissioners. We ask all supporters to wear green (representing keeping Margate’s green space) and attend this important meeting on December 6, 2023 at 7PM at City Hall!

The golf course is l-shaped. In 2021, the owner decided to close the golf course since it was not making money nor did he want to try and market it as a golf course. The golf course is presently closed and in the midst of being turned into a housing development if Commissioners vote for it! Here is a video of the previous Margate Executive golf course and the communities that surround it, in Margate, Florida.

Although this land is owned by private sector, it was intended for Homeowners who currently surround the golf course to have green space .

Many examples of some problems redeveloping this land include:

How can you help keep Margate green?

1. If you are on Facebook, go to Keep Margate Green and like this page to stay current on this redevelopment problem! We all want to see nature, animals, golfers and natural, green beauty; not more traffic, higher density and more buildings!

2. Attend Margate city meetings and voice your opinion! Meetings are held in the City Chambers as well as on Zoom. Anyone can attend either way to voice our outcry.

3. Have you signed the Keep Margate Green petition? Oriole Gardens II and surrounding communities currently has over 3,500 signatures on their petition! (Oriole Gardens II owners live on the south side of Margate Executive Golf Course and many condos are literally feet from the golf course!)

4. Contact City of Margate Commissioners and let them know you DO NOT want them to vote to re-zone or develop buildings on the Executive Golf Course or Carolina Golf Course property. We want to keep Margate’s green space! The City Comprehensive plan states that these green belts were not intended to change due to the higher density surrounding the golf courses in Margate. The Owner, Mike Fimiani wants to re-zone, not the City of Margate.
