If there’s one thing people don’t tell you about retirement, it’s that it can be unstimulating to the point of boring. There are lots of things you can do to keep yourself busy, however, and getting a part-time job (or starting your own business) is a smart choice. Not only will you have something to do, you’ll have more disposable income to enjoy life on the days you don’t.

Before we look at payroll positions, your retirement years might be a great time to start your own home business. Keep in mind that this will likely need to be a job you can perform on a computer without bringing additional traffic into the neighborhood. But, if you have graphic design, photo-editing, or writing experience, you may be able to start a business in Florida and file for your LLC online. Get Out of the House
If working at home doesn’t sound appealing, never fear. There are plenty of jobs that make sense for seniors, and most of them won’t require a full-time commitment. A few of these include:

• Event attendant. An event attendant is an individual that ushers guests, collects tickets, or screens attendees for hazardous materials. You can work at the events of your choice, and there’s no experience required.
• Retail store greeter. If you live near Walmart, you’ve no doubt seen mature men and women sitting on a barstool tagging incoming returns and checking outgoing receipts. This is a store greeter, and many major retailers will be happy to put you to work.
• Child care worker. Child care workers in Florida make around $12 per hour. But, more than money, you have an opportunity to be around little ones, which might help fill a gap if you’re missing your grandchildren.
• Photographer. If you already own a camera and have creative skills, consider taking senior, couples, or portrait photos. Set your own rates, and can shoot at some of the most beautiful locations in the state.
• Data entry clerk. An eye for detail and the ability to type quickly and without errors is just about all you need to work as a data entry clerk. According to State University, these types of full-time jobs are on the decline, but you can likely find a contract position, which is perfect when you want to set your own schedule.
• Substitute teacher. There is a critical shortage of substitute teachers in the United States. And, although Frontline Education notes that there is no singular cause, the fact remains that we need interim educators now more than ever. As a substitute educator, you can choose the days and schools in which you want to work, and you’ll never be asked to work nights or weekends.

While waking up to an alarm every morning might not sound like your ideal retirement, working part-time can have many benefits for you. You’ll stay active, and you’ll have more money. Plus, now that you no longer rely on a full-time salary, you can choose what you want to do and, potentially, start your own business to fulfill whatever dreams you gave up as a young adult.
