Keep Margate Green Attends DRC

Keep Margate Green supporters attended the DRC meeting on September 26, 2023 at 10am. The City of Margate’s Development Review Committee (DRC) consists of representation from several departments including but not limited to: Building, Code Compliance, Environmental and Engineering, Fire, Police, Parks and Recreation and Public Works. All aspects of the application were reviewed. Keep Margate Green had 16 supporters who wore green quietly representing our desire not to redevelop any of the green space in Margate.

Fimiani Development Corp. is trying to build 137 townhomes at what was previously known as the Margate Executive Golf Course. This application and desire is to rezone the land beside and behind Garden Patio Villas and Oriole Gardens II and build “Springdale Townhomes” development.

The DRC meeting had three agenda items. It discussed the land use, rezoning and the site plan for Springdale Townhomes. The Land Use was given conditional approval. The rezoning is a part of the process because this land is not currently approved for residential use. The site plan was combined with rezoning and was also given conditional approval.

The two biggest concerns which were not resolved at this meeting were:

  1. How much open space there was and if it met the required criteria of the City of Margate and Broward.
  2. Moving the canal. The biggest issue dealt with the sand and the hardening of the moved canal and what is technically required from the applicant.

What’s next?

The next step of the application process will be reviewed by the Planning and Zoning Board. Although at this time we are uncertain of the date, it could possibly be on November 9, 2023 at 7PM at City Hall Chambers. We recommend you get involved and attend this meeting and support Keep Margate Green!

After that meeting,  the final step would be a vote by the Margate City Commissioners on the development proposal. Commissioners will discuss, review and listen to residents who want to share their comments about the redevelopment of the Margate Executive Golf Course into 137 townhomes. At that meeting, they will vote and it will need 3 of 5 votes to pass in favor of the application. If this does not occur, the application will not be able to proceed to redeveloping the land into townhomes.

We hope as this application moves forward you will attend meetings to represent Keep Margate Green.

We want to remind you to contact the City Commissioners and let them know, again, you do not want this property that is green space to be redeveloped into townhomes!

We don’t want a lot more traffic and noise in our backyards, through our community, off Margate Blvd. and 76th Avenue You need to make a fuss now or it will be too late!!!
